Why Does Happiness Plummet at 50?

I recently turned 50, and a post on Threads caught my eye. It showed a graph (pasted below) demonstrating happiness levels by age, and not surprisingly, happiness levels plummet at 50.

The person posting asked, “Can someone please explain this? Does it suck really bad to be 50?”

Gut Punch

My answer has gained a little traction, so I thought I’d share it with you:

“50 is a gut punch:

1. Peak Monopoly 💰 time — spending is staggering, responsibilities endless (+ the realization that ⏰ and options are running out).

2. Regret creeps in — choices you didn’t make, chances you didn’t take, courage you couldn’t find. (It’s potent and painful, heavy with accountability.)

3. You’re poised for the upswing if you are resilient, confident, and optimistic enough to stare that moment in the face —
