Today a client told me a story about her C-level boss, whom she admires greatly. They were in a big meeting with significant consequences for her firm when the meeting was interrupted.

The C-level boss’s child fell at daycare and would require stitches and parental presence. The boss reportedly sent her mother-in-law instead.

First Question: Is the Boss Male or Female?

The boss is female.

Second Question: Does it Matter?

Deep sigh. Yes, no, it shouldn’t. It does; it’s complicated.

Things Have Changed

A record 11.5 million jobs were available in March. Meanwhile, 4.5 million people quit their jobs during the same month. What in the world is going on?

The short version is people quit drinking the kool-aid during the pandemic. They are no longer willing to work bad jobs for low wages and bad bosses, in unsafe environments, with long commutes, inflexible schedules, and no healthcare or paid leave.

It’s not a work ethic problem, so don’t go there, but it doesn’t explain the people leaving jobs that aren’t so bad, does…
