That Lack of Control You’re Feeling Right Now? That’s Burnout
One of my clients, in response to the Texas school shooting, said, “I knew that how I felt about business would be impacted by becoming a parent, but I had no idea that I would have to make long-term career decisions about where I lived and worked to keep my kids safe.”
“This isn’t going away, is it?”
Gun control matters to the future of business and work because it matters to parents, families, and society. And since it’s important to explore issues from the individual and systemic levels, I’ll use myself as an example. I’m a work-from-home mom of three elementary-aged children.
During the first few weeks of summer, I alternate between coaching, writing, gardening, and mom life. I thrive in learning, planning, and doing mode, but balance is achievable because I control when, where, and how I work.
I love the flexibility of making progress each day in my business, at home, on my health, and for my family, but I’m feeling a new level of burnout, not because of my workload or to-do list, but because of what I can’t control.
“Burnout isn’t overwork — what causes burnout is lack of control.” — Justin Welsh
