Two Versions of Me: Why One Life Isn’t Enough

Last night, I found myself on a rooftop hotel bar with five friends from college, and the duality of my life struck me. One friend is still in television, an industry I was a part of for 13 years.

She had on the heels, the designer bag, the confidence of someone still certain. She is the previous version of me who was deeply immersed in the fast-paced, glamorous world of television, a world I loved and thrived in.

And then there’s present-day me.

I’ve been out of that industry since 2016. But as I looked around, it felt familiar and different. That version of me, the one who thrived on business travel, hitting goals, and entertaining? I loved her. And I still love her.

But there’s also a new version of me now — the one who volunteers at the school, serves on the PTCO, packs lunches, and tucks my kids in every night.

Balancing these two versions of myself and their different demands on my time and energy has been a journey. I work out in the middle of the day, write and work on projects, and spend my energy in entirely different ways.

The truth is, both parts of me are real. Both are essential.
