Balancing Act: Gratitude, Forgiveness, and Growth
Today is my birthday.
And I’m disappointed to report that I woke up thinking about something awful. It was a hard time in my life, and the people involved were not my friends. I was young and trusted them (kind of), and I have regrets.
So, not rainbows and unicorns. Not even cupcakes and confetti.
When I get pulled to the dark side, I have a default exercise that kicks in. First, I start listing what I’m grateful for:
- My husband
- My daughter
- My son
- My daughter
- Our dog
- Our home
- My body (I go through each part top to bottom or bottom to top, one at a time, until my heart rate returns to normal, my muscles unclench, and my breathing slows down. (Sometimes, I have to list more parts or more people. More gratitude is always the answer.)
Then, I say, I forgive you. I forgive everyone involved. I forgive myself for making poor choices, not knowing better, for my part in it. I forgive the situation. This act of forgiveness is a powerful tool that can bring peace and healing…
